Meet the Team

Matthew Barnes-Smith

Matthew is a fully qualified Personal Performance Life Coach and NLP Practitioner. As a Youth Worker, running youth clubs and workshops for young people and parents, he specialises in coaching and mentoring young people in their teenage years and early 20s.

Matthew is passionate about developing confidence in young people and empowering them to take control of their life and choices and to be the person they truly wish to be.


Merete Langler

Merete is a fully qualified Master Coach and NLP Practitioner with her own business. A former Deputy Head Teacher, Merete uses her coaching skills with a range of young people in transition. She also combines this with her passion for Small Business Coaching, working with the Apprenticeship scheme.

In both strands she finds that the challenges are similar- they just have different labels. Her work extends to coaching around public speaking and interview techniques; taking time out to make clear, informed decisions at key crossroads in life; making the most of networking opportunities and improving areas that cause dissatisfaction to the client. Clients have said they enjoy the way she challenges and moves them forward using a calm, gentle manner and sharing her sense of fun. In each case they have moved forward with clear focus and positive results.

Sharon Lawton

Sharon Lawton is a parent and family lifestyle coach, NLP Practitioner and DISC trainer. She has her own very successful coaching practice specialising in self-esteem, parenting skills, anger/conflict management, relationships skills, emotional wellbeing and managing stress both in the family and in the workplace. She coaches and supports parents, young people and staff working in the education sector.

In 2015 she won International Parent Coach of The Year in the Coaching Academy International Coaching Awards. An award she is extremely proud of.

Sharon has coached both in the private and public sector, with clients that include Shell UK, Aviva Insurance, Hertfordshire County Council and The Herfordshire Family Centre Service. She is also the resident family coach for The Chrissy B Show on Sky Channel 191.

Rachael Bushby

Rachael is a teacher, coach and mentor on a mission to empower young lives by providing coaching skills and knowledge to young people, their parents and their educators. As co-founder of Dragonfly: Impact Education, Rachael champions the belief that to thrive, mental and emotional health are just as important as physical health. For Rachael, coaching is the golden thread that runs through it all.

Rachael has fifteen years of classroom experience and, as a Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching, is completely committed to education, passionately believing that wellbeing has a huge impact on academic achievement and progress. As a parent, Rachael has also seen the world through different eyes, which led to a desire to share her knowledge of coaching and mentoring with other parents. Rachael was finalist in the 2019 TCA Coaching in Education category and is proud to have supported hundreds of individuals and schools throughout the UK.

Lisa Read

Lisa is an award winning coach and trainer with a professional background as a teacher and senior school leader, much of her coaching is focused on education, particularly in creating mental fitness and leadership programmes that work to make schools positive workplaces.

She has worked with 100s of schools, multi academy trusts, teaching school alliances and universities, and was one of just 16 coaches selected to deliver coaching to schools for a London 2012 Olympics national development programme which ran from 2011 to 2019.

Her company wrote and delivered the first ever national Women in Leadership Programme for one of the UK's largest trade unions and offers degree level programmes for union staff through Ruskin College, Oxford. Lisa leads Sheffield Coaching Exchange, our coaching community for South Yorkshire.

Course Structure

Our syllabus is the most advanced in the UK, designed by professional coaches and endorsed by academic bodies. It comprises of home study, practical one to one coaching practice and six live virtural (online) training days (known as accelerator days) which can be taken in any order.

Coaching Leaders in Education - with Lisa Read

This module will focus on the foundation stones of being a successful coach within the education sector with a specific focus on coaching leaders in education.

This module will cover what leaders in education want from coaching and how you can make yourself an indispensable part of their support network.

You will leave with tips and tools focusing you on the HOW TO coach education leaders and make a difference in this exciting sector.

Areas covered include:

  • Understanding the real challenges facing our leaders in education
  • Getting your foot in the door
  • Starting to create what you can offer as a coach in education
  • Coaching headteachers and other school/education leaders
  • Possibilities for Inset days, training workshops and group coaching opportunities

Coaching Young People with Matthew Barnes-Smith

This module focuses on promoting young people's proactive mental, emotional wellbeing and physical health by helping them to break down barriers that prevent them from being able to be the person they truly wish to be.

The workshop presents a candid view of the actual practice of working with young people balanced with the pure form and theory of coaching. This follows a three-step process blended with dynamic and interactive group exercise and game activities to consolidate your learning:

1. Getting to know the young person by understanding their story, world, reality, needs and wants

2. Building trust with the young person through listening, sharing experience, giving them advice, safe guarding, protection and support

3. Essential tools and guidance for managing the young person's fears and stress.

You will leave the workshop confident of your ability to coach young people and will be equipped with a new set of tools and guidance techniques to add to your current coaching skills and knowledge that can make a difference to the lives of young people.

Youth in Transition - with Merete Langler

This module will help you to enable young people to discover skills and techniques they need when they are in times of transition and faced with making sometimes difficult but important decisions. Young people face many such times of change and often feel ill-equipped to deal with them. What questions should I be asking myself? How will I know if I've made the right decision? Completing this day will furnish you with the skills to help young people at times when they need it most.

This will provide you with the techniques and skills you need to coach young people through the transition they face and to be able to make great decisions with confidence such as:

  • What subjects should I choose for GCSEs, A levels or university?
  • Do I leave school or stay on?
  • Do I go to university or college?
  • What shall I do when I get there?
  • How will I cope living away from home?
  • Should I take a Gap Year?
  • What job shall I look for?
  • What do I want in my relationships?

This module focuses on core issues such as identifying strengths and values, overcoming obstacles, decision-making, setting realistic goals, and boosting confidence.

When young people discover what they want in life and are able to set realistic and achievable goals, they will be more determined and focused, and take personal responsibility for themselves and their actions. Their motivation and confidence will soar. This not only applies when interacting with their peers but also when thinking about their education, relationships and planning their future career.

When you have completed this module, you will have the understanding and ability to coach young people through some of their greatest challenges and to be able to provide them with the life-long skills and techniques that they can use to identify, face and overcome any obstacles and to reach any realistic goal they set.

Parent and Family Life Coaching - with Sharon Lawton

Parents beat at the heart of the family. Parenting can be the toughest job we will every do, but equally, can be extremely rewarding.

This fun and interactive module will look at how you coach parents in their family relationships in a supportive and non-judgemental way. You'll learn practical tools to use when coaching children and parents as well as ways to improve relationships between parent and child.

We will also look at Parent coaching markets and the key reasons why people use a Parent Coach - both with private and corporate clients, and also through working with your local authority. You'll have an awareness of the differences in parent coaching and the potentially diverse markets you can reach in your work.

You will finish this module with a bag full of creative ideas and exercises to use at your own Parent Coaching Workshops and also when coaching 1-1. Not only will you be passionate about coaching parents, you'll also have a clearer picture how to generate great business from this .

Coaching In Schools, Supporting Professional Wellbeing - with Rachael Bushby

This module will focus on the importance of coaching within schools in the promotion and support of professional wellbeing.

The sessions will provide you with the background to healthy cultures within school communities and the link between well staff and thriving students. Through a focus on both what we see on the surface and what is happening below the surface, the module explores the unique challenges faced by those who work in education and provides insights into how coaching can help to shine a light on these issues. By enabling coachees to find their own lasting answers, coaching can offer schools solutions to issues that are at the heart of education.

Jam-packed with practical tools, the module will equip you to take your coaching into schools and work with educational professionals with confidence.

Webinar Module - Safeguarding and Legislation

This essential module will provide you with the full practical and legal knowledge you need to be an effective and ethical coach in a fun, realistic and memorable way. You will explore all the issues you need to take into account when forming coaching relationships with children, young people and their parents.

This module brings the legislation and policy guidelines to life. You will learn about the rights and needs of young people, as well as the relevant Government legislation and The Coaching Academy ethics and standards that every Coach working with young people must adhere to.

Specifically, you will learn:

  • Confidentiality: how to communicate what it is, the legalities of what you can offer and what you can not - and why
  • How to gain consent for coaching and assess for 'competency to consent to coaching'
  • What needs to be recorded and why
  • Understanding Safeguarding/Child Protection and what to do in any situation, including dealing with disclosure
  • The importance of supervision
  • The importance of Criminal Records Checks and your professional duties
  • What needs to be covered in the initial session and must be in place before coaching commences
  • Ethical boundaries and how to ensure these are respected by both parties?

This crucial module is compulsory for anyone wishing to graduate. You will leave confident that you know the context for coaching young people and can operate at the highest standards.
